John H. Oak is a Korean pastor known as discipleship training maniac. For 38 years since he planted Sarang Church in 1978, he has been steadily generating Christ-like lay leaders. It was through discipleship training that he came to know the struggles and problems that lay people face, and came to realize what and how to teach them through the constant wrestle with the Word. ‘Called to Awaken the Laity,’ published in 1984, is the crystallization of his lifelong work of discipleship training. The book became the beginning of the gale of discipleship training that perceived as the monopoly of the para-church movement in the past, grafting it to the reality of local churches. Furthermore, Sarang Church is known both insides Korea and abroad as a fertile field that has produced much fruit through discipleship training.
